How Magic Jake Started ✨

(From a 5-year-old watching a magic show… to performing across Australia)

Three people smiling and waving. One has purple hair and a purple vest. Outdoors with greenery and a yellow flag in the background.

Every magician has an origin story — and mine started way earlier than I ever expected.

Long before the purple hair, big crowds, and busy weekends of shows, I was just a kid sitting cross-legged on the floor watching a magician perform at my preschool.

I was five years old… and completely hooked.

🎩 The First Spark of Magic

I don’t remember every trick from that day, but I remember the feeling — the laughter, the surprise, and how one person could walk into a room and completely change the energy.

For years after that, magic stayed in the back of my mind. Then when I was 11, something clicked.

I started borrowing magic books from the local library and teaching myself tricks. No fancy equipment, no YouTube tutorials — just pages, practice, and a lot of trial and error.

And of course… a lot of testing.

😂 My First Audience (Sorry, Teachers…)

School became my training ground.

Friends, teachers, anyone who would stand still long enough — they all became part of the early Magic Jake experiments.

Some tricks worked.Some definitely didn’t.

But every reaction taught me something new, and slowly I started to realise this could be more than just a hobby.

🎈 The Garage Sale That Changed Everything

My first real performance wasn’t on a stage — it was at a garage sale.

I set up, performed a few tricks, and somehow ended up booking my first small parties from it. One gig turned into another, and suddenly I wasn’t just practising magic… I was performing.

That was the moment it started to feel real.

🎪 Finding My Style — And the Purple Hair

As I got older, I moved into street performing and busking at festivals around Coffs Harbour, NSW.

Street performing teaches you one big lesson very quickly:

👉 if you don’t grab attention fast, people keep walking.

That’s where the purple hair came from.

At first it was just a way to stand out and build a crowd — something bold enough to make people stop and look. But over time I realised it was more than that.

People might forget a magician’s name…but they always remember the magician with the purple hair.

It became part of the brand, part of the energy, and honestly — part of who I am now.

🧙 Running a Business Before I Finished School

While most people were figuring out part-time jobs, I was running my own performance business during high school — travelling around Coffs Harbour performing at events, parties, and festivals.

It was busy, chaotic, and incredibly fun.

And along the way, I was lucky enough to step in front of the camera on shows like Australia’s Got Talent, The Today Show, and Getaway, which was a surreal experience for someone who started by borrowing magic books from the library.

🌴 The Big Move to the Gold Coast

At 20, I made one of the biggest decisions of my life — moving to the Gold Coast, QLD to grow Magic Jake even further.

Starting fresh meant rebuilding everything from the ground up. New audiences, new connections, new challenges.

But step by step, show by show, the magic found its place here too.

And honestly? That journey is still unfolding.

✨ Why I Still Love What I Do

People sometimes ask if performing ever gets old.

The answer is always the same — not even close.

Every crowd is different. Every show has unexpected moments. And every time I see a room full of laughter, wide eyes, and kids completely lost in the magic… it reminds me why that five-year-old at preschool never let this dream go.

Because at the end of the day, it’s not just about tricks.

It’s about creating moments people remember.

And I get to call that my job.
