(Spoiler: it starts with coffee… and ends with a lot of laughter 😄)

Primary school students are captivated and full of joy while watching Magic Jake perform his enchanting show.

Every school show day looks a little different, but there’s always one thing guaranteed — a room full of energy, curiosity, and kids ready to shout their best guesses before I even finish a sentence.

Here’s a behind-the-scenes look at what a typical day performing at a primary school really looks like.

🚗 Early Start & The Drive In

Most school show days start early. The car gets packed the night before — cases, balloons, sound gear, and the all-important backup kit (because something always tries to escape the case at the last minute).

Driving up to a school always brings a little excitement. There’s something special about knowing hundreds of students are about to experience the show together.

🎒 Setup Time Before the Bell Rings

Arriving early is key.

Before students even walk into the hall, I’m:

  • checking the performance space

  • setting up sound and props

  • testing microphones

  • making sure every seat has a good view

Sometimes teachers pop in for a quick chat, which helps me get a feel for the age groups and the vibe of the school.

👧👦 The Moment the Students Walk In

This is always my favourite part.

You can feel the energy shift as students fill the space — whispering, pointing at the props, trying to guess what’s about to happen.

There’s always that one kid who locks eyes with me and mouths, “I know magic.”

Challenge accepted 😄.

🎩 Showtime — Controlled Chaos

Once the music starts, everything comes alive.

Hands shoot up.Laughter fills the room. And suddenly the shyest student becomes the star volunteer on stage.

Primary school audiences are amazing because they fully commit — they cheer for each other, shout out theories, and celebrate every moment together.

And yes… someone will always yell, “IT’S UP YOUR SLEEVE!” at least once.

🍎 After the Show — The Best Conversations

When the show ends, kids often come up to chat, ask questions, or share their own magic ideas.

Teachers usually tell me which students lit up the most — especially the quiet ones who found their confidence during the performance.

Those little conversations are some of the best parts of the day.

🚗 Pack Down & The Drive Home

Once everything’s packed back into the cases, it’s time to head off — usually replaying funny moments from the show in my head.

Every school is different, every crowd has its own personality, and that’s what keeps it exciting.

Because even after thousands of performances, no two days ever feel the same.

✨ Why School Days Are Special

Performing at primary schools isn’t just about magic tricks.

It’s about creating a shared moment where students laugh together, feel confident enough to join in, and walk away with a little more wonder than they had before.

And honestly?

Getting to be part of that is the best job in the world.
